Offspring response to maternal signals in Apistogramma

The Mummy Machine

In the course of this project, I created an automated model control device – the Mummy Machine. This will facilitate the controlled use of fish models for use in behavioural trials, with dichotomous choice tests in mind. The machine is able to simultaneously control two separate models with programmed movement, leaving the tester free to concentrate on observations.

A top-down view of the machine in action. The device is held on a raised platform, preventing transmission of vibration to the aquarium below.

The modular design allows for quick changes in arm length (and path size), rod length, and model type.

The movement can be pre-programmed in code to simulate natural behaviour, or controlled manually.
